Outdoor Climbing Instructor

Are you an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor? Do you want to be? We’re looking to hire a few qualified individuals to support our outdoor guiding program! 

Brimstone offers private guided trips, skills clinics, and kids camps that climb at crags throughout The Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood National Forest & beyond. 

An ideal team member will come with the following qualities: 

  • Has taken an SPI Course, with intent to take the exam by the end of June 2024.

  • Current WFR Certification or higher.

  • Great customer service skills.

  • Ability to problem-solve, self-motivate and self-manage.

Bonus points for:

  • Interest and experience working with youth in an outdoor environment. 

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Is a current SPI and has worked as an SPI or higher for over a year.

  • A clean driving record.

Outdoor climbing instructors are paid a day rate depending on level of certification and experience.

Summer Camp Instructor

Want to help inspire a love of climbing in the youth of the Gorge? We’re on the hunt for a couple of assistant instructors for Brimstone summer camps. 


In order to be considered for a position, candidates must have a passion for working with, supervising and entertaining kids, an interest in rock climbing and be able to:

  • Self direct.

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with both kids and parents.

  • Communicate and commit to summer availability in advance. 

  • Pass a criminal background check. 

Bonus points for: 

  • Experience instructing, managing and entertaining groups of kids.

  • CPR and/or First Aid Certifications.

  • A clean driving record. 

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Rock climbing experience and familiarity with climbing terms and techniques.

  • Outdoor rock climbing experience.

The right culture fit will get priority over climbing specific experience. 

Our base pay starts at $14 an hour. With relevant experience, we have some room to negotiate on a starting wage.

Head Coach & Youth Programs Director

Company Overview: 

Brimstone Boulders is a small bouldering gym in an old church in Hood River, Oregon, dedicated to providing a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages and skill levels. Come summer 2024, we will double the square footage of our existing gym, which will give us space for a designated kids learning zone, fitness area, bigger barre and yoga studio and climbing training center.


Position Overview:

The Youth Programs Director & Head Coach will work with the existing team to shape and implement youth climbing programs as we enter this phase of expansion. In addition to a lead role with the competitive climbing team, responsibilities will include the development and management of a range of youth-focused initiatives, including classes, camps, competitions and special events.This position is ideal for an individual excited to grow with the company and dedicated to fostering a positive and educational environment for young climbers. 

Pay: 

$40,000-50,000 yearly salary. This has the potential to increase as programs demonstrate success and profitability. 

Start Date:

Flexible, but must be willing to start before September 2024.

Job Responsibilities:

Head Coach:

  • Provide hands-on coaching to youth climbers, with a focus on skill advancement and personal growth.

  • Create training and practice plans appropriate for a range of ages and ability levels.

  • Be a point of contact for parents and athletes.

  • Hire, train, and mentor assistant coaches.

  • Manage all back end team logistics (Sport 80, scheduling, budget, etc.).

  • Plan outdoor climbing days, visits to other gyms and other extracurricular team activities.

  • Attend USAC events.

  • Maintain visibility and positive relationships with all athletes.

  • Communicate event needs (competitions, outdoor climbing days etc.) to the General Manager.

  • Schedule and fill in for assistant coaches as necessary. 

Youth Programs Director:

  • Collaborate with the leadership team to develop programming for after school programs, summer camps and other youth offerings. 

  • Hire, train, and provide feedback to program staff.

  • Be prepared to fill-in for staff as necessary.

  • Respond to and contact parents as necessary.

  • Create and input the youth programs schedule for each session of class.

  • Monitor enrollment in all programs.

  • Create new programming as demand changes.

  • Manage back end logistics (RGP calendar, billing, etc.).

New Program Development: 

  • Revamp the current Brimstone programming model to include use of the kids’ zone for after school programs and the training center for climbing teams. 

  • Research and incorporate successful programming models from other climbing facilities.

  • Create new classes based on observed demand for certain types of programming growth.

Must Haves: 

  • Experience instructing rock climbing to youths.

  • Ability to pass a background check.

  • USAC L2 coach certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.

  • CPR certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.  

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with athletes, parents, and other staff members.

  • Organizational skills proficient enough to schedule, budget, practice plan, etc. 

  • Ability to learn and take on new responsibilities as needed. 

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience coaching competitive rock climbing. 

  • Routesetting experience.

  • AMGA SPI certification or higher. 

  • CWI Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.

  • Experience managing a medium sized staff.

  • Experience using Rock Gym Pro.
