Assistant Coach

The Assistant Coach will work with the Head Coach to shape the direction of the youth climbing team. In addition to attending practices and competitions, the assistant coach will build relationships with athletes, communicate with parents, and do administrative tasks as needed.

This position is ideal for an individual excited to grow with the company and dedicated to fostering a positive and educational environment for young climbers. 


Pay: 

$18/hr. We have room to negotiate for the right candidate with relevant experience. 


Hours:

Weekly Coaching: About 10 hours per week 

Competitions: The assistant coach will attend approximately two competitions a month during the season. Hours for these vary based on the event. 

Currently we have opportunities for more hours in different roles at Brimstone (youth program/summer camp instructor, outdoor guide, front desk, routesetting, etc.) For the right candidate, this could be a 30-hour a week position.


Start Date: 

Flexible. Ideally as soon as possible, but must be willing to start by September 2026 at the latest. 


Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on coaching to youth climbers, with a focus on skill advancement and personal growth.

  • Execute training and practice plans set by the Head Coach.

  • Lead a group of athletes through a practice independently when needed.

  • Be a point of contact for parents and athletes.

  • Participate in outdoor climbing days, visits to other gyms and other extracurricular team activities.

  • Attend USAC events.

  • Communicate team needs and concerns to the Head Coach.

  • Maintain visibility and positive relationships with all athletes.


Must Haves: 

  • Experience instructing rock climbing to youth.

  • Ability to pass a background check.

  • USAC L2 coach certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.

  • CPR certification, or ability to get it within 30 days of employment.  

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with athletes, parents, and other staff members.

  • Ability to learn and take on new responsibilities as needed. 


Bonus Points for:

  • Experience coaching competitive rock climbing. 

  • Setting experience.

  • AMGA SPI certification or higher. 

  • CWI Climbing Wall Instructor Certification.

  • Experience using Rock Gym Pro.

  • A clean driving record (no at fault accidents or tickets in the past 3 years).

Note: The right culture fit will get priority over specific climbing industry experience.

Lead Summer Camp Instructor

Want to help inspire a love of climbing in the youth of the Gorge? We’re on the hunt for a Lead Summer Camp Instructor. 

About Brimstone Summer Camps:

Summer camps start on June 22nd and run for eight weeks. We host indoor climbing camps for 5-9-year olds and outdoor adventure camps of varying levels for kids 8 and older. Campers will have opportunities to climb both indoors and outdoors, play games, visit local parks, go on hikes and do arts and crafts. We strive to send every child home stoked and tired.


About the Job:

The Lead Summer Camp Instructor will work under the supervision of the Youth Program Director to execute on the plan and goals for each week and collaborate with an assistant instructor to provide a fun, safe, and challenging environment for all campers.

In order to be considered for the position, candidates must have a passion for working with, supervising and entertaining kids, an interest in rock climbing and be able to:

  • Self direct.

  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with both kids and parents.

  • Communicate and commit to summer availability in advance. 

  • Pass a background check. 


Bonus Points for:

  • CPR and/or First Aid Certifications.

  • A clean driving record. 

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Rock climbing experience and familiarity with climbing terms and techniques.

  • Outdoor rock climbing experience.

The right culture fit will get priority over climbing specific experience. 

Our base pay starts at $17 an hour. With relevant experience, we have some room to negotiate on a starting wage.

Outdoor Climbing Instructor

Are you an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor? Do you want to be? We’re looking to hire a few qualified individuals to support our outdoor guiding program! 


Brimstone offers private guided trips, skills clinics, and kids camps that climb at crags throughout The Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood National Forest & beyond. 


An ideal team member will come with the following qualities: 

  • Has taken an SPI Course, with intent to take the exam by the end of June 2026.

  • Current WFR Certification or higher.

  • Great customer service skills.

  • Ability to problem-solve, self-motivate and self-manage.


Bonus Points for:

  • Interest and experience working with youth in an outdoor environment. 

  • Fluency in Spanish.

  • Is a current SPI and has worked as an SPI or higher for over a year.

  • A clean driving record.
