Carl Miler grew up under a roller coaster. Literally. His father designed and built portable roller coasters, and Carl and his nine older siblings spent summers roving the West in a converted 1950's school bus, sleeping under the big dip by night, helping his father run and maintain the ride by day.

The skills and spacial awareness Carl developed as a kid led him to a career as an industrial wood metal and composite pattern maker in Portland, where, in 1999, he caught the climbing bug in a tiny gym in Beaverton.

Over the decades that followed, Carl continued to climb every free moment--after work, on weekends, and on every vacation. He’s climbed in every state west of the continental divide, Europe and developed countless routes on the basalt and andesite of the PNW. For ten years, he helped coach kids on the Stoneworks Junior Climbing Team--including Brimstone co-owner, Jen Altschul--then went on to coach an adult climbing team at another Portland gym.

At long last, Carl has decided to merge his passion with his work and join the Brimstone Team as a jack of all trades--a coach, a fixer of things, a front desk employee and a wearer-of-whatever-other-hats-he’s-handed. We’re beyond lucky to have him on the team.

Outside of the ole church, Carl, plays his drums and guitars, attempts to play the electric keyboard, sings, writes silly songs and spends time with his lovely wife, Brimstone’s head route setter, Molly Beard, and their three feline daughters (they’re not crazy, they swear).
