and skiing at age ten when a femur fracture gone bad meant she couldn’t run, or play soccer or basketball (a merciful accident, which you know if you’ve ever watched her try to throw something). Jen competed as a member of Stoneworks Junior Climbing Team through middle school and high school, then launched a nine month climbing road trip around the states out of the back of an ‘88 Volvo wagon. When the weather started to turn, Jen moved to the Gorge, where she had weaseled her way onto the Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Patrol. Jen moved to Seattle to wrap up a bachelors in creative writing, then stayed in the big city another six years to work as a producer for The Dirtbag Diaries podcast--but the Gorge was still ‘home’. Finally, she lured Conor to Hood River to start a climbing gym. You can still hear her on the Dirtbag Diaries, and catch her in a red coat at Meadows, now and again. After an intermission to earn a degree in Biology at Lewis & Clark, Nathan returned to the competitive climbing scene as a youth coach for the Multnomah Athletic Club. While Nathan comes to Brimstone with a strong background in competition, his true passion lies in getting to watch and facilitate joy and personal growth in the climbers he works with--regardless of climbing experience or ability. Outside the gym, Nathan loves to climb crumbly PNW rock (even more than the bulletproof California granite he grew up on), ski, backpack, climb mountains and find the best Thai food in town. Circumstances as they were, Conor started climbing in earnest in college at Central Washington University, while he earned a degree in flight technology. Now, Conor has climbed all over the states, but still has a soft spot for the basalt columns of Vantage, where it all began for him--though he never turns down a trip to Smith, Yosemite or City of Rocks. When he’s not climbing, Conor flies small, fixed-wing airplanes, teaches other people to fly, skis, mountain bikes, rides motorcycles and talks often about how much he’d like to ice climb again. As a kid, he fell in love with Mt. Hood, the Gorge and playing outside through ski racing. Now, he coaches high school ski racing, and takes advantage of the brief four years with his athletes to teach them how to carve properly, but, more importantly, to instill a lifelong passion for skiing and playing outside. Five years ago, Hanson fell for rock climbing--hard enough that he took up rope access work in an attempt to turn climbing, with less hand holds and more comfortable shoes, into a career. Now, he’s brought his passion for all things climbing and for working with kids to Brimstone, as well, where, if you’re lucky, you might catch him whistling. (It’s impressive). These days, when he’s not on a chairlift, at Brimstone or dangling from a rope, you can find Hanson on a mountain bike, a road bike, a backpacking trip, hunting or fishing. From that time forward, Jeni Harris knew that, one day, she would live out here. In college, she set aside some money for climbing gear. She got as far as a harness and shoes before she decided to instead spend the money on river gear. Over the past two decades, Jeni has worked as a multi-day river guide, a ski patroller and an eco-tour guide in Alaska. She has a special way of making people comfortable in situations outside of their comfort zones. The accent doesn’t hurt. These days, Jeni loves to run rivers, ski and hike with her husband and their dog, Sadie. Upon moving to the Pacific Northwest in 2014, his love of the outdoors naturally brought him back to bouldering more frequently. He has been an avid climber for the last four years. When he’s not on the wall you can find him hiking, petting every dog he sees, watching hockey with a Pilsner in hand, playing the guitar, cooking, or planning his next travel destination with his wife, Hazel. A lover of live music & all things shred-worthy, you’ll often find him playing air guitar to jam bands in between climbs. (Not literally. He did go home after we closed). So, we figured we ought to make it official and bring him onboard. Zeb and his family moved to Hood River from Maui at age five, and has called the Gorge home ever since. In June, he’ll graduate from Hood River Valley High School. When he’s not at Brimstone, Zeb skis, swims (when it’s hot), plays video games and plays with his border collie, who can’t put the ball down, and his thirteen year old miniature poodle, who has never picked a ball up. The first time she walked into Brimstone, she kicked off her shoes, and went galloping across the pads in her stocking feet, squealing with glee. We don’t endorse this type of behavior during open hours, (in Marge’s defense, the gym was closed, at the time), but it does illustrate why Marge made such a wonderful K-8 teacher, and hosts such joyful yoga classes for both kids and adults, now. Marge grew up in Michigan where the seeds for her love of the outdoors were planted. After college she made her way west and made friends with rock faces, through both climbing and skiing, along the way. Yoga entered her life a decade ago. She grew into the Gorge yoga community, then took an Imagination Yoga for children instructor course in Portland that rocked her world. Since that first session, ten years ago now, Joe has been busy: He has climbed mountains and rock routes in Canada, Greece, and across the US, earned a degree in Education, become an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor (i.e. a rock climbing guide), a USA-Climbing Route Setter, a Wilderness EMT, and an outdoor program manager. Five years ago, Joe and his wife, Claire, moved to Portland and have since visited all seven natural wonders of the state. The authenticity of the Pacific Northwest was a stark contrast to the unreliable lifestyle of Southern Nevada's most scandalous city, yet he quickly found his place within Portland's quirky and accepting style. Soon after he arrived, when it didn't seem like things could get better for a young adult out on his own for the first time, Juan's climbing career began to flourish through lifelong friendships and industry relationships. The love and support that poured from the climbing community set Juan on a trajectory that would have him climbing all over the country and then all over the world, sharing a combined passion for climbing and a less conventional lifestyle with whomever he made friends with. These days, Juan runs AntiGravity Equipment, a climbing shop based in SW Portland, teaches and coaches climbing and works as an interpreter. As she got a little older, the three of them went climbing, whether it was in their garage, at the park, or at The Circuit in Portland. In middle school, she joined an after school rock climbing program for two years. She was taking a break from climbing in high school, until she saw a flyer for Brimstone at a coffee shop downtown. As a Hood River native, she’s eager to join the Brimstone passion for climbing & community. She finds the idea that people can come together to inspire and challenge one another just by climbing fake rocks amazing and, well, hilarious. When she’s not busy with mounds of schoolwork or at Brimstone, Zoë enjoys dangling upside down from aerial silks, teaching preschoolers at Hood River Alliance Church, skiing at Meadows and watching old musicals (including her favorites, Pirates of Penzance & Singing in the Rain). Eva has lived in Hood River her whole life. That didn’t stop her from entering the international arena in climate action and feminist activism. But Eva has also focused attention here at home: In middle school, she started a Gorge-based summer camp that she ran for six years, and in high school, she worked with Intel to teach middle school girls how to code and taught kids to ski on Mt. Hood. The pandemic put a pause on her Stanford-bound academic career, but she hopes to fill that time with good food, good friends, good climbing--and maybe even learn something, too. One day, she realized she wasn’t happy. Victoria kept her sanity for the rest of her legal career on the East coast through her yoga practice, her local climbing gym and whirlwind weekend climbing trips to West Virginia’s New River Gorge. In 2011, Victoria walked away from her law practice and completed yoga teacher training with Eoin Finn, surfer, yogi and founder of Blissology, which, in his words, “is about mining for the source of love inside all of us that is especially evident when we are quiet and present in nature.” After stints exploring mountain life in Colorado and Leavenworth, WA, Victoria is happy to call the Gorge home. Connecting to nature is a major theme of her classes. Victoria and her husband devote much of their free time on the quest for clean waves and powder days. She fits right in with the Brimstone Team, with her love of beer and canines. She first fell in love with climbing on a backpacking trip through Cambodia. Back in the States, she earned a RYT-200 (Registered Yoga Teacher 200-hour) certification as a way to deepen her own practice--then discovered she loved to teach. For two years, Becca fused her passions for climbing and yoga and taught classes at a San Diego climbing gym. In the fall of 2019, Becca loaded up her self-converted Sprinter van and drove north from her hometown in Southern California. Becca discovered a new kind of paradise in an old Hood River home on a large orchard where she now lives. Becca’s classes focus on joint longevity, pain alleviation and sustainable movement habits. She often incorporates Bowspring alignment principals into her offerings, which builds from a different postural template than traditional yoga. When she’s not at Brimstone, Becca raises seven chickens and bartends at Mt. She enjoys exploring mountains, rivers, and, sometimes, concrete jungles. In the winter she ski patrols at Mt Hood Meadows. In the summer she works on the river for Wet Planet. Movement has always been important to her. Her father once told her about sea squirts who “eat their brains” once they stop moving, and, ever since then, she has been convinced that the reason we have brains is to move! She resonates with the non-dual philosophies of yoga that link the physical and spiritual realms. She finds the language of the body to be the most truthful, and believes that people are healthiest when they feel connected to their body and natural environment. April completed 200hr Yoga Teacher Training with Usha Veda Yoga, in Greenpoint, BK, and is also a certified barre instructor. She is currently working towards her 500hr RYT with Authentic Movements, and is also taking the Anatomy and Physiology series at CGCC. She loves providing space for her students to connect to their bodies in her yoga and barre classes. She also enjoys studying dance. While she could barely carry the pack and cried most of the time, something inspired her to return to outdoor adventures year after year. As Dana got older, her love for nature deepened and drove her to study, travel, live and work all over the globe, until friends and natural beauty ultimately landed her in The Gorge. Dana’s yoga journey began in 2005 when she walked out of her first yoga class feeling like she was floating on clouds. This feeling inspired her to study different types of yoga practices and philosophies, and, eventually, drew her to begin teaching in 2011. She has now completed over 500-hours of training in a variety of styles. In her classes, Dana offers breath focused, fluid movement classes with alignment cues that explore anatomy, personal development and playful discovery of the self. She believes that yoga is a lifelong study on and off the mat; one that can be practiced in a studio, at home, in the classroom, on an adventure, at work…all the time.
